About the Blog

Theology and Practice are two integral sides of the same coin.

Theology is the study of God and how we relate to God. Followers of Jesus believe that the Bible is God's Word to his people; therefore, the Bible tells us all we need to know in order to think rightly about God and our relationship with him. So, the Bible is the one reliable standard of truth by which all things must be measured. Praxis means exactly what it sounds like—practice. Maybe you've heard someone say, "Practice what you preach." That's what I hope to encourage with this blog. I want to consider everything from current events to life in general in light of the two-part question, "What does the Bible say about God, and how should we, therefore, actively respond to that? As for the "bitesize" part, I'll try to keep things brief. :)

    Nice to meet you!

Pride, Prejudice, and the Voting Booth

The 2016 election season has been characterized by controversy and division. I doubt I’m alone when I say I’m glad it’s over—the election, that is. The controversy and division certainly remain. Everyone has an opinion about who should (or shouldn’t) have been elected president, and for good reason. But that’s not what I want to […]

Wisdom Proverbs 11:28 “Anyone trusting in his riches will fall, but the righteous will flourish like foliage.” God is our Savior and Sustainer! He’s the giver of life, both temporal and eternal. He’s clearly the One we should trust to take care of us, the One we should call on in times of need. But […]

Wisdom Proverbs 11:27 “The one who searches for what is good finds favor, but if someone looks for trouble, it will come to him.” Sometimes it seems that trouble just finds us! As we’re going about our day, we get blindsided by life’s craziness, and find ourselves in a pickle. But other times, trouble comes […]

Wisdom Proverbs 11:25 “A generous person will be enriched, and the one who gives a drink of water will receive water.” God is a generous Father! He loves to bless His children with gifts! James explains that all we have is a gift from God: ”Every generous act and every perfect gift is from above, […]

Wisdom Proverbs 11:22 “A beautiful woman who rejects good sense is like a gold ring in a pig’s snout.” This could be my favorite proverb ever. It’s funny, but it’s also very true! We often associate beauty with goodness. Just look at kids’ movies! The hero is most often quite physically attractive, while the villain […]

Wisdom Proverbs 11:21 “Be assured, an evil person will not go unpunished, but the offspring of the righteous will be delivered.” When a person does something evil, and they seem to get away with it, we often cry out to God and ask, “Where is justice?” We want vengeance—some kind of reckoning. We want that […]

Wisdom Proverbs 11:17-19 “A man who is kind benefits himself, but a cruel man hurts himself. The wicked earns deceptive wages, but one who sows righteousness gets a sure reward. Whoever is steadfast in righteousness will live, but he who pursues evil will die.” Our perception of reality is warped because of our sin nature. […]

Wisdom Proverbs 11:14 “Where there is no guidance, a people falls, but in an abundance of counselors there is safety.” God has been gracious to us in His gift of counselors. We all need guidance, and we all have opportunities to provide guidance to brothers and sisters in need. He means for us to receive […]

Wisdom Proverbs 11:9 “With his mouth the ungodly destroys his neighbor, but through knowledge the righteous are rescued.” God deserves all our worship, and to worship God is the best thing for us! Worshiping God is really just living life the way it works best—the way He intended for us to live! And we are […]

Wisdom, Worship, and The Word (8/4/2016)

Wisdom Proverbs 11:4 “Wealth is not profitable on a day of wrath, but righteousness rescues from death.” No one can buy grace. In fact, by definition, grace is unmerited (unmeritable!) favor. So, no matter how much we might be willing to pay, no amount of money would be enough. No matter how hard we might […]
